The 50-period exponential moving average tracks roughly a quarter of trading history and is the standard reference for the intermediate trend. Institutions and position traders watch it closely, which gives the line a self-fulfilling quality: pullbacks to a rising 50 EMA in strong stocks are among the most bought dips in technical trading. This screener lists every stock whose latest daily close is above its 50 EMA.
Being above the 50 EMA separates stocks in functional medium-term uptrends from those merely bouncing inside downtrends. Many classic momentum templates — including variations of the CANSLIM 'trend template' — require price above the 50-day line as a non-negotiable precondition before any breakout or pullback entry is considered.
The scan pairs naturally with its neighbours: stocks above the 50 but below the 20 EMA are often mid-pullback (watchlist material), while stocks above both with the EMAs stacked in order belong to the bullish-alignment leadership list. Tracking when a long-time member of this list finally loses the 50 EMA is equally informative — it is frequently the first structural crack in an extended run.
How to use this scan
- Use 'above the 50 EMA' as a minimum trend-health requirement before taking long setups.
- Hunt pullback entries: strong stocks retesting a rising 50 EMA from above offer defined-risk opportunities.
- Check the slope — price above a rising 50 EMA is a real uptrend; above a flat one is just a range.
- Watch members that start closing marginally above the line with shrinking margin: weakening trends telegraph themselves.
- Cross-reference with the 200 EMA scan to find stocks in full long-term alignment.
Risks & limitations
The 50 EMA is a lagging average — by the time price loses it, a meaningful decline has usually already occurred, and in volatile stocks the line gets whipsawed. No single indicator condition is a trade recommendation. Screener output is a starting shortlist, not a buy or sell call — it ignores fundamentals, news, earnings dates, promoter actions and your personal risk profile. Results are computed on completed candles from historical NSE data, so intraday moves after the last update are not reflected. Always confirm on the chart, size positions conservatively and use stop-losses.
