How the Watchlist works & how to use it
Methodology
The Liveworldmarket Watchlist is a personal, browser-local list of instruments you want to keep an eye on — indices, futures, single stocks, currencies and commodities from any of the markets we cover. It is designed for at-a-glance monitoring: the page pulls the same live-price stream that powers the main dashboard, refreshes it every five seconds while markets are in session, and displays each instrument as a compact card with the current price, change vs the previous regular-session settle and an intraday sparkline.
Your list is stored in your own browser's localStorage — we do not require an account, we do not send the list to our servers, and we cannot see which instruments you follow. That means the list follows the browser (not you), and clearing site data or switching devices will start you with a fresh list.
How to build a useful watchlist
The most effective watchlists are small and structured around a specific question. Three starter templates that work well for an Indian retail trader:
- Global handoff — GIFT Nifty, S&P 500 futures, DXY, Brent, USD/INR. Answers: "What kind of open should I expect at 09:15 IST?"
- Indian benchmarks — Nifty 50, Sensex, Bank Nifty, Nifty Midcap 100, India VIX. Answers: "Is the broad market participating in today's move, or only the large caps?"
- Sector rotation — Nifty IT, Nifty Bank, Nifty Auto, Nifty Metal, Nifty FMCG. Answers: "Which sectors are leading and which are lagging today?"
A common mistake is adding fifty single stocks and then not scanning any of them; a tight five-to-ten instrument list that you actually check is far more valuable than a long list you ignore.
Adding & removing instruments
To add an instrument: open its Symbol page or Stock page and tap “Add to watchlist”. You can also add any card directly from the main dashboard using the small star icon that appears on hover. Remove an instrument by tapping its card's remove control on this page.
Rearranging: drag any card by its handle to reorder. The order persists in localStorage across sessions on the same browser.
Data sources & refresh cadence
Each card's live price is aggregated from Yahoo Finance (primary), Upstox (secondary, Indian instruments) and TradingView Scanner (tertiary global-futures fallback). The dashboard refreshes every five seconds while the underlying market is in session; outside of session hours the card shows the last settlement print and the “Closed” badge. Change percent is calculated against the previous regular-session settle, the same convention used by every major broker for mark-to-market P&L on overnight positions.
Privacy & portability
Because your watchlist lives entirely in your browser, there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to lose in a data breach at our end — we literally do not have your list. The trade-off is that switching devices or browsers will not carry the list with you. If you want your list to survive a device change, take a screenshot of the current page or simply note down the symbols and re-add them on the new device.
Frequently-asked questions
- Do I need an account?
- No. The watchlist is stored entirely in your browser's localStorage — no signup, no email, no server-side storage.
- Will my list sync across devices?
- No. Because we don't store the list on our servers, it stays on the browser you built it in. Switching devices starts fresh.
- Is there a limit on how many instruments I can add?
- Practically, no — but performance degrades with hundreds of live-updating cards. We recommend five to twenty for a focused view.
- Do you send email alerts on my watchlist instruments?
- Not yet. Watchlist-triggered alerts (e.g. “email me when Nifty 50 crosses 25,000”) are on the roadmap but not currently available.
- What data providers power the prices?
- Yahoo Finance (primary), Upstox (secondary, Indian instruments) and TradingView Scanner (tertiary fallback for global futures). Prices may be delayed up to fifteen seconds.
- Is this investment advice?
