Understanding the Volume Above 1.5× 20-day Average scan
Volume is the market's polygraph: price says what happened, volume says how much conviction was behind it. This screener returns stocks whose latest completed session traded at least 1.5 times their own 20-day average volume — a meaningful, above-normal participation day relative to each stock's personal baseline.
Using relative rather than absolute volume is what makes the scan honest across a 500-stock universe: 10 lakh shares is a dead session for a large-cap and a stampede for a small-cap. A 1.5× reading marks sessions where someone with size showed up — institutional accumulation, distribution, news response or the opening shots of a breakout. The number itself is neutral; combining it with the day's price action gives it direction.
Volume analysis frameworks from Wyckoff onward rest on this exact observation: significant moves are born on expanding volume, and quiet drifts against heavy-volume levels rarely stick. Scanning the list daily builds a map of where the market's real money was active — often days before the price consequences become obvious.
How to use this scan
- Read each match with its candle: heavy volume on a strong close is accumulation-flavoured, on a weak close distribution-flavoured.
- Track repeat appearances — the same stock printing multiple 1.5× days in a fortnight is under active institutional interest.
- Use as a confirmation layer for breakout scans rather than a standalone signal.
- Investigate matches with no obvious news; unexplained volume often precedes announcements.
- Note volume spikes at range extremes — they frequently mark the level that decides the next move.
Risks & limitations
High volume alone is directionless — expiry days, index rebalances, block deals and bonus/split adjustments all inflate volume without any signal content. No single indicator condition is a trade recommendation. Screener output is a starting shortlist, not a buy or sell call — it ignores fundamentals, news, earnings dates, promoter actions and your personal risk profile. Results are computed on completed candles from historical NSE data, so intraday moves after the last update are not reflected. Always confirm on the chart, size positions conservatively and use stop-losses.
