Understanding the Price Down With High Volume scan

The bearish mirror of volume confirmation: stocks that closed lower while trading far above their normal turnover. In Wyckoff terms these are distribution days — declines that large holders actively sold into, rather than quiet drifts caused by absent buyers. This screener surfaces them across the universe after every completed daily candle.

Heavy-volume declines carry information in both directions, which is what makes this list worth reading carefully. Early in a topping process, clusters of distribution days while an index still hovers near highs are one of the most reliable internal warnings documented in momentum literature. But at the end of long declines, a final huge-volume flush — the capitulation day — often prints the low itself, as the last anxious holders surrender to whoever is absorbing the supply.

Distinguishing the two cases is a location-and-aftermath exercise. Distribution appears near highs, breaks support levels and sees weak bounces afterwards. Capitulation appears after extended declines, often with gap-downs into long-tailed hammers, and is followed by price refusing to make new lows. The volume prints identically; the chart around it does not.

How to use this scan

  • Near highs, treat clusters of matches as distribution warnings for stocks you hold.
  • After long declines, watch for capitulation signatures — huge volume, long lower tails, no follow-through selling.
  • Mark each heavy-volume decline's low; reclaiming or losing it decides the next phase.
  • Count distribution days across the index constituents as a market-health gauge.
  • Never knife-catch a high-volume breakdown without a completed reversal structure.

Risks & limitations

Telling capitulation from ongoing distribution in real time is genuinely hard — buying every heavy-volume decline 'because it must be the bottom' is a classic account-destroyer. No single indicator condition is a trade recommendation. Screener output is a starting shortlist, not a buy or sell call — it ignores fundamentals, news, earnings dates, promoter actions and your personal risk profile. Results are computed on completed candles from historical NSE data, so intraday moves after the last update are not reflected. Always confirm on the chart, size positions conservatively and use stop-losses.
