Price Up With High Volume — Nifty 500 Stock Screener
This screener applies the oldest confirmation rule in technical analysis — price and volume rising together — returning stocks that closed higher on the day while trading well above their 20-day average volume. In classic volume-analysis language these are accumulation days: advances that real money paid up to participate in.

Understanding the Price Up With High Volume scan
This screener applies the oldest confirmation rule in technical analysis — price and volume rising together — returning stocks that closed higher on the day while trading well above their 20-day average volume. In classic volume-analysis language these are accumulation days: advances that real money paid up to participate in.
The pairing matters because either half alone is cheap. Stocks drift higher on vapour volume in quiet markets constantly, and heavy volume without price progress signals churn rather than demand. Together they describe the specific footprint that institutional buying leaves: sustained lifting of offers, strong closes, expanding turnover. Research on accumulation/distribution day counts — popularised by O'Neil's follow-through framework — is built directly on this event type.
The strongest reads come from location. A high-volume up day that clears a multi-week base is initiation and belongs on a breakout watchlist immediately. A cluster of them during a pullback (heavy up days, quiet down days) is stealth accumulation. The same event after a long vertical run, especially with an intraday fade off the highs, deserves suspicion — climactic buying often marks the crowd arriving last.
How to use this scan
- Prioritise matches breaking out of consolidations — volume-confirmed breakouts are the premium subset.
- Compare up-day versus down-day volume over the past few weeks to spot stealth accumulation.
- Check the close's position within the day's range — strong closes near the high confirm genuine demand.
- Recurring appearances by the same stock are more informative than one-off spikes.
- Cross-reference earnings dates; post-result volume surges follow different dynamics than technical ones.
Risks & limitations
Late-stage rallies also print spectacular up-volume days — climactic buying at trend ends looks identical to accumulation in a scanner and only location on the chart separates them. No single indicator condition is a trade recommendation. Screener output is a starting shortlist, not a buy or sell call — it ignores fundamentals, news, earnings dates, promoter actions and your personal risk profile. Results are computed on completed candles from historical NSE data, so intraday moves after the last update are not reflected. Always confirm on the chart, size positions conservatively and use stop-losses.
