Understanding the Previous-Day High Breakout scan
The simplest breakout in trading: today's price trading above yesterday's high. Crossing the previous day's high means every intraday seller from the prior session has been absorbed — a small but genuine shift in the supply-demand balance. This screener lists each stock in the universe whose latest completed candle broke above its previous day's high.
Day and swing traders build entire methodologies on this single level. In momentum systems, the previous-day high acts as the trigger line for continuation entries: a stock consolidating tightly for several sessions that then takes out the prior high often begins its next push exactly there. The level is also self-policing — if the breakout is genuine, price should not spend much time back below it.
Quality separates on three axes: context (a breakout inside an uptrend above rising EMAs versus one inside a decline), range structure (breaking the high of a narrow inside day carries more information than breaking a wide choppy bar), and participation (relative volume above 1.5× turns a technical poke into a statement). The best matches combine all three.
How to use this scan
- Filter matches by trend first — previous-day-high breaks in aligned uptrends are the tradable subset.
- Prefer breaks of narrow-range or inside days; they offer the tightest logical stops.
- Demand relative volume: quiet breaks fade far more often than heavily-traded ones.
- Use yesterday's low (or the breakout bar's midpoint) as the invalidation reference.
- Combine with the 20-day-high scan to find stocks clearing bigger levels the same day.
Risks & limitations
Previous-day highs break constantly — this is a high-frequency, low-specificity event, and without trend and volume filters most breaks resolve as noise. No single indicator condition is a trade recommendation. Screener output is a starting shortlist, not a buy or sell call — it ignores fundamentals, news, earnings dates, promoter actions and your personal risk profile. Results are computed on completed candles from historical NSE data, so intraday moves after the last update are not reflected. Always confirm on the chart, size positions conservatively and use stop-losses.
