Hang Seng Index Futures — A Practical Guide

Hang Seng Index Futures (HSI), traded on Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX), are the primary derivative for Hong Kong / China equity exposure. The contract is sized at HK$50 × Hang Seng Index, making one contract worth roughly HK$1 million notional at current levels. HSI futures are highly active during Asian trading hours and provide the cleanest single-instrument hedge for both the Hang Seng Index and broader China-tech exposure.

For global macro traders watching Asia overnight, HSI futures are the cleanest English-language proxy for Chinese-equity sentiment. Hang Seng moves often precede broader Asian-equity moves by minutes during sharp news-driven episodes.

History & contract origins

Hang Seng Futures launched on HKEX (then Hong Kong Futures Exchange) in May 1986. The contract has been continuously traded since and is now one of Asia's most-liquid equity-index futures. The HSI Mini contract (HMHI) at HK$10 multiplier was added later for retail accessibility.

Trading hours & session layout

HKEX HSI futures trade in two sessions tracking cash market hours plus an after-hours session (IST):

Afternoon session10:30 - 13:30 IST
After-hours session14:45 - 00:30 IST next day

Holiday calendar (typical annual closures)

How to read this tape

Read HSI futures alongside USD/CNH (offshore yuan) — a weakening CNH typically pressures HSI futures because Hong-Kong-listed Chinese names hold local-currency liabilities. Watch HSI futures during US session for overnight directional shifts.

After-hours session (14:45 - 00:30 IST) is particularly volatile because it spans US cash market open — China-tech ADRs can drive HSI futures sharply.

Frequently asked questions

What is HSI Mini?

HMHI — a smaller HK$10 multiplier version of HSI futures for retail accessibility. Same expiry cycle and price action, 1/5th the contract size.

How does HSI compare to A-share futures?

HSI tracks Hong Kong-listed mainland China names + Hong Kong domestic stocks. China A50 Futures tracks the 50 largest mainland-listed A-shares. Two different baskets with ~0.7 daily correlation.

Is HSI futures volatile?

Yes — annualised vol of 25-35%, higher than developed-market futures. Driven by China policy risk and Hong Kong-specific political risk.

Can Indian residents trade HSI futures?

Indirectly via LRS route through an international broker with HKEX access. Most use Hang Seng ETFs (2800.HK, EWH on US listings) instead.
