Market participants often compare GIFT Nifty Future with the broader Nifty 50 to judge whether the sector is leading or lagging the Indian market. Sector strength ahead of index strength can sometimes coincide with institutional rotation into the group.

GIFT Nifty Future — The Pre-Open Signal for Indian Markets

GIFT Nifty is a US-dollar-denominated futures contract on India's Nifty 50 index, listed on the NSE International Exchange (NSE IFSC) at GIFT City, Gandhinagar. It is the successor to the SGX Nifty contract that was discontinued in July 2023 following the relocation of all offshore Nifty futures liquidity to GIFT City under a regulatory arrangement between NSE and SGX.

For Indian retail traders, GIFT Nifty is the single most important pre-open signal of the day. It trades roughly 21 hours, Monday to Friday, so by 06:30 IST it has already absorbed overnight US cash-session moves, European sentiment, oil and yen swings — all the global cues that will determine where the cash Nifty 50 opens at 09:15 IST. The empirical correlation between the GIFT Nifty pre-open print and the cash Nifty opening tick is extremely high (typically >0.85 on a 30-day rolling window).

History & contract origins

Singapore Exchange (SGX) launched the original SGX Nifty contract in September 2000 to provide international investors with exposure to Indian equities without the operational overhead of trading via Indian-resident brokers. By the late 2010s it had become the dominant overnight venue for Nifty futures, with average daily volumes exceeding the NSE domestic Nifty futures itself on many days. In 2018 NSE notified SGX of plans to terminate the licence; after lengthy negotiations the two exchanges agreed to migrate the offshore liquidity to a new IFSC venue, and trading transitioned to GIFT Nifty on the morning of 3 July 2023. Today GIFT Nifty is the sole offshore Nifty futures venue.

How to read this tape

Watch three signals from the GIFT Nifty tape. First, the GIFT Nifty premium / discount to spot Nifty fair value — typically a positive premium of 20–80 points reflecting cost-of-carry. A discount opening (GIFT below spot fair value) almost always translates to a gap-down cash open. Second, watch GIFT Nifty's behaviour after 02:30 IST when US cash markets close — any reversal of the overnight move is often retraced at the 09:15 IST cash open. Third, monitor the spread between GIFT Nifty and Nifty Futures (NSE near-month) during overlap hours — large dislocations attract arbitrage and tend to compress within minutes.

Liveworldmarket sources GIFT Nifty live quotes directly from the Upstox API — the same feed that NSE IFSC-authorised members use. That means the prices you see on this page are the authoritative live ticks, not a delayed third-party feed.

Frequently asked questions

Is GIFT Nifty the same as the old SGX Nifty?

Functionally yes — they track the same underlying Nifty 50 index. The contract spec (size, tick value, expiry cycle) is also similar. The venue, regulator, and settlement currency conversion are different: SGX was Singapore-regulated; GIFT Nifty is regulated by India's IFSCA at GIFT City.

Can Indian residents trade GIFT Nifty?

Indian resident retail investors can trade GIFT Nifty under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) via an IFSC-registered broker. This is operationally more complex than trading NSE-domestic Nifty futures and is typically used by institutional or HNI accounts. Always consult a SEBI-registered adviser before opening an offshore trading account.

Why does GIFT Nifty sometimes diverge from US futures overnight?

India-specific events (RBI policy, INR move, FII flows, domestic news) can override global cues. A common pattern: US futures rally overnight on dovish Fed talk, but GIFT Nifty fades the gain if INR weakens or domestic risk-off news hits.

How accurate is the 06:30 GIFT Nifty print as a Nifty opening signal?

Empirically very high in direction (>85% accuracy on direction of gap) but only moderate in magnitude. Indian-specific factors typically amplify or dampen the gap by 0.1–0.3% in either direction.
