Understanding the Bollinger Upper-Band Breakout scan

Bollinger Bands wrap a 20-period moving average with envelopes two standard deviations wide, so the bands themselves breathe with volatility. A close above the upper band is a statistically loud event — price finishing more than two standard deviations above its own one-month mean. This screener catches each stock doing exactly that on the latest completed daily candle.

John Bollinger's own guidance flips the naive interpretation: a close outside the upper band is not automatically 'overbought' — it is more often a mark of strength that begins or continues a move, particularly when the bands had first contracted into a squeeze. Volatility cycles from quiet to loud; the squeeze-then-breakout sequence is the indicator's signature trade.

Reading a match therefore starts with the band width behind it. A breakout emerging from visibly pinched bands is the high-interest case — compressed energy releasing. A close above bands that were already wide from days of rallying is late-stage extension and mean-reversion territory. 'Walking the band' — repeated closes along the upper envelope — is how the strongest trends look, and fading them is a known losing habit.

How to use this scan

  • Check band width first: breakouts from squeezes are the premium signal, breakouts from already-wide bands are extension.
  • Never short a stock simply for closing above the band — strong trends walk the band for weeks.
  • Combine with volume: a squeeze-break on expanding volume is the classic continuation setup.
  • Use the middle band (20 SMA) as the natural trailing reference after entry.
  • Watch for repeat closes above the band — persistence signals trend, a single poke may just be a spike.

Risks & limitations

Roughly 5% of closes land outside two-sigma bands by construction alone — without the squeeze context and volume confirmation, band breaks are routine statistical events, not signals. No single indicator condition is a trade recommendation. Screener output is a starting shortlist, not a buy or sell call — it ignores fundamentals, news, earnings dates, promoter actions and your personal risk profile. Results are computed on completed candles from historical NSE data, so intraday moves after the last update are not reflected. Always confirm on the chart, size positions conservatively and use stop-losses.
